Downard’s newest EP ‘Talk Shop’ is akin to watching Tom Morello and Dean Tzenos go ballistic in a basement. It’s not difficult to imagine losing yourself in a sweat-ridden venue to the mire-drenched riffs of ‘Katie-Sue’ as our heads swim in the industrial wash of Andy Pickett’s vocals — but at home, I’m not as convinced.

Each song feels more like a movement, yet one that doesn’t expand on the ideas of the opening piece, rather replaying it with minor alterations. We know that Downard can marry melody and malice in their music with spectacular results, but unfortunately, off-stage at least, ‘Talk Shop’ just misses the mark.
