As a band who’ve slowly sealed themselves as big-name headliners over the years, here is an album that simply must match the profile. But from the first warped seconds of fourth offering ‘What Went Down’, you know it’s going to shape into something mammoth, heated and wholly definitive.
Numbers like ‘Birch Tree’ and ’Night Swimmers’ showcase those fruitful, plucky guitars that are now unmistakably Foals, but there’s an ever-present context and ferocity behind Yannis Philippakis’ vocals that mean this one will be on my record player for years to come; an important record that moves swiftly on from ‘Holy Fire’. Which can’t have been an easy task.
