Punka was created in 2017 by a group of friends as a not-for-profit indie-rock club night for the LGBTQ+ and friends’ community in Bristol. Reacting to the overwhelmingly underwhelming statistics about the number of prominent women on festival bills, they have sought to celebrate the likes of Bikini Kill, The Gossip, Garbage and Paramore. Normalising what ought to feel normal in the first place and championing the under-represented is their mantra.
Their recent Punka Presents night, an off-shoot of the club night, brought the triple bill of The Gin Birkins, positively meditative in comparison to the gripping set from Menstrual Cramps and the audio onslaught of Kiss Me, Killer, all linked by the CBGB-style cabaret of host Ruby Rawbone. Mar Reyes was there to capture it. She described the show as “crazy.” Good crazy, that is. Sanity is over-rated anyway.
