Gwenno’s long awaited second album is finally here. After four years, the powerful Welsh singer is back with an even bigger bang. After the phenomenal success of her debut album, winning Best Welsh Album at that year’s Eisteddfod, the news that she’s released new material was universally well-received. Her Welsh/Cornish background has been the main source of inspiration for her music, with her debut focusing on Welsh as a minority language, whereas her latest record is focused on the Cornish side of her heritage.
All the songs on the new album are written in Cornish, with Gwenno being one of the very few people who can speak the language. Themes of culture and identity echo through; her tantalising melodies are tangibly hypnotic.
Coinciding with the release of Le Kov, Gwenno will be making a pit stop in Bristol and gracing The Louisiana with her psychedelic electro sound and Rachel Goswell-like vocals. Featuring guest vocalist Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals on the track ‘Daromres Y’n Hawl’ and produced by Welsh heavyweight, Gorwel Owen, Le Kov is a uniquely stunning album. It’s not every day you get to hear contemporary electronica Cornish songs.
The first single, ‘Tir Ha Mor’ has since been released and is racking up the plays online. Get yourself to The Louisiana this Thursday. It’ll be a Cornish psych wonderland.
