27th July | Rough Trade
After a disastrous flood in their studio which left the band missing most of their back catalogue, it’s safe to say that Hookworms didn’t have the best of luck at the tail end of 2015. Gigs were few and far between after the event and fans were left wondering how they were going to bounce back from the travesty.
Fast forward three years and an album later, the psych-noise-fuzz quintet are raring to perform their latest material. Hailed as a seminal psychedelic album, ‘Microshift’ was greeted with rave reviews, and rightly so. It’s drenched in distortion, hard-hitting pop melodies and punchy synths. A thematically fluid album with several of the tracks surpassing the five-minute mark, fingers crossed there’ll be plenty of room for some extended masterpieces and earlier tunes at their intimate Rough Trade gig on Friday. Personal faves to hear live would be the frantic ‘Ullswater’ and slur-jangled beast ‘Since We Had Changed’.
Sadly the gig is already sold out, but make sure to grab yourself a ticket for their October show at SWX. This will be one to tell your grandchildren about.
