With his latest release, Bristol’s Howlin’ Lord (Mark Legassick) is beating down the same world-weary path as his folk forefathers – the resemblance to Bob Dylan on ‘Ned Kelly’ is uncanny. Yet Legassick takes these characteristics and makes them his own. He turns a phrase with all the wry grace a singer-songwriter should possess. The songs have a toe tapping rhythm, despite their contemplative presentation. The five songs on Breakfast For Champions therefore make for a stark, strangely endearing collection; it’s music for the bottom of the bottle based on a glass half full/half empty philosophy, but your best bet is not to overthink it.
