Poliça @ O2 Academy, Bristol. 06.02.14.

Last year, the release of Minnesotan foursome Poliça’s second album of hallucinatory synth-pop sparked a worldwide buzz, and next month they stop at Bristol’s O2 Academy as part of a busy 2014 European tour, set to enchant their ever-growing number of listeners.

It’s evident from the acclaimed ‘Shulamith’ that their sound is designed to be experienced live. Lead singer Channy Leaneagh’s hypnotising vocal has the distorted quality of Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser and is carried by the charging pulse of two drummers in her live set-up. The disorientating howl of synth that haunts their music emulates the effects of a wild night on psychedelic drugs and will undoubtedly send a few customers into a sonic coma.

With an array of dark music videos to accompany the album (including a disturbing visual partner to ‘Tiff’, a collaboration with Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon in which Leaneagh tortures a clone of herself in a grimy dungeon), their performance is sure to be a thrill. Lock up your daughters!
