Thurston Moore | Live Review
Thurston Moore @ The Fleece, Bristol. 08.11.14.
To be soaking in the colourful guitar work of Moore in such close proximity is nothing less than a sheer privilege.
Thurston Moore has never been one to rest on the laurels of his past career, the man is very much living in the present, still making tunes with the ability to compel a compact room such as The Fleece.
He returns to Bristol with the brilliance of new album ‘The Best Day’ right behind him. Although it’s not long before the venue is peppered with Sonic Youth t-shirts itching to catch a glimpse of the man who helped define the American alt-rock scene.
Discretely taking to the stage and opening up a notebook filled with lyrics, he summons attention with the psych notes of ‘Forevermore’, it’s a building yet delicate noise that so easily whirs us into a trance-like state of mind. The musicianship is immense, although that should come as no surprise considering his band features Deb Googe of My Bloody Valentine and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.
Everything feels like it’s been formulated to a near scientific level. The precision between the guitars onstage flow like honey during ‘Speak To The Wild’. It’s evident that those who came expecting old material won’t be getting it, but this doesn’t bother me one inkling; to be soaking in the colourful guitar work of Moore in such close proximity is nothing less than a sheer privilege.The quiet demeanour of the band adds to their mysterious edge, enhancing the brood and intensity of the music they deliver. ‘The Best Day’ stands out as the peak of the set, only due to the fact that it’s one that nearly everyone is familiar with. The folky twang of the song sparks the crowd into a bit of action, pints are gulped and things are suddenly loose.

Tonight Thurston Moore has shown he can still produce the goods and deliver them with flawless confidence. Outstanding.
