Freedom Fry

Words: Laura Eley
So far 2013 has been the year for boy / girl duo’s. First was the take off of electronic two- piece AlunaGeorge after featuring on Disclosure’s mighty ‘White Noise’ which reached number 2 in the charts. Before we knew it, MSMR were supporting Bastille on their UK tour dates and London’s Alice Costelloe and Kacey Underwood who form Big Deal became well… a big deal.

Now Parisian born Mari Seyrat and Michigan native Bruce Driscoll – who also forms part of indie pop favourites Blondfire – are the latest two piece on the block, ready to show the world what they’ve got with their perfectly assimilating blend of boy/girl vocal, glittering percussion and skyscraping choruses.

Their most recent EP ‘Friends and Enemies’ – a lofty, danceable 12 minute jaunt - leads you into the depths of the twosome’s personal world as Seyrat softly coos “all of my friends are ghosts/ none of them get close to me”- the masking of this meaningful lyricism under a bed of twangy basslines and sun-dappled, synthy melodies making for just the right blend. Imagine Metronomy in slow-motion, swirled with Melody Prochet- esque vocals and harmonies which fit together like Slow Club’s Charles and Rebecca and you’re almost there.

Having released songs in both French and English, Freedom Fry have racked up quite a following in their native France and America… We reckon it’s only a matter of time until they crack the UK.
